Division for Biblical Pastoral Counsellors Certification

The Division for Biblical Pastoral Counsellors, operating under the auspices of the Association of Certified Chaplains in South Africa, is dedicated to the professionalization and empowerment of individuals committed to delivering spiritual, ethical, and emotional support grounded in Biblical principles.

This Division fosters the advanced development of competencies in pastoral counselling, enabling practitioners to offer holistic spiritual care and effectively address the mental and emotional challenges faced by diverse communities. By establishing rigorous professional standards, facilitating certification processes, and promoting ongoing education, we strive to equip counsellors to practice with integrity and cultural sensitivity while maintaining a profound theological foundation.

Our mission is to ensure that pastoral care is not only compassionate but also adheres to the highest standards of effectiveness and professionalism.

 

1. Foundational Objectives

- Standardize Biblical Pastoral Counselling:

Develop recognized qualifications, ethical standards, and competencies aligned with South African and international best practices in pastoral care. 

- Enhance Public Awareness:

Advocate for the unique role of biblical pastoral counseling in addressing spiritual, emotional, and  moral challenges

- Create Pathways for Professional Registration:

Establish a formal registration and certification process that allows counsellors to      gain recognized status, similar to other licensed pastoral or mental health professionals

2. Structural Components of the Division

- Board of Advisors:

A diverse group of experienced pastoral Counsellors, Theologians, Chaplains and Ministers to guide the              division’s strategic direction.

- Ethics and Oversight Committee:

Responsible for maintaining ethical standards and addressing issues related to counselling practice, confidentiality, and conflict resolution.

3. Certification and Training Requirements

- Core Educational Requirements:

Formal training in both biblical studies and counselling psychology (minimum of a diploma or degree in these fields). Coursework in crisis intervention, counselling theory, active listening, cultural competence, and trauma-informed care.

- Continuing Education:

Requirement of ongoing education to ensure counsellors stay updated on new methods, ethical guidelines, and community needs.

- Supervised Practical Experience:

Minimum required hours under a certified supervisor to gain practical experience and mentorship in real-world counseling contexts.

4. Programs and Services

- Training Workshops and Conferences:

Host specialized (paid) workshops on pastoral counseling, ethics, crisis intervention, and spiritual resilience.

- Accredited Training Programs:

Partner with theological colleges and seminaries (e.g Christian Leadership Academy) and other affiliates (e.g Jewish Chaplaincy) to offer recognized courses in Pastoral Counselling.

- Supportive Resources:

Provide access to resources, such as study materials, practice guidelines, and a network of pastoral professionals.

- Mentorship Program:

Match registered counsellors with experienced mentors to foster growth and professional confidence.

5. Public Outreach and Community Engagement

- Educational Campaigns:

Raise public awareness on the benefits of biblical pastoral counseling through seminars, online resources, and outreach to faith communities.

- Community Partnerships:

Work with local churches, mental health organizations, and other faith-based institutions to establish referral pathways.

6. Certification & Membership Categories

- Affiliate Member:

For clergy, lay counsellors, or trainees actively pursuing certification, offering access to resources and support.

- Certified Pastoral Counsellor:

For professionals with training in both theology and counselling, fulfilling the educational and experience requirements set by the Division.

- Registered Pastoral Counsellor:

A title for those who have completed continuing education, ethics training, and demonstrated commitment to professional development.

- Specialist Pastoral Counsellor: 

For those with a Doctorate in Pastoral Counselling.
